The idea of Mobilewatch was first born over 10 years ago when smartphones became a significant security threat in corporate boardrooms. Our first advice was to remove the phones from restricted areas. However, since very few organisations were able to enforce this kind of policy, we had to come up with an alternative IT based solution that would enable the identification and location of all phones in a room and differentiate between authorised and unauthorised devices.
We first developed such technology in 2005, revolutionary at the time, which detected all mobile signals in a normal-sized boardroom. This worked well initially. However, the system was unable to provide the precise location of the devices found. Additionally, the operational side of this technology was very laborious as it required analysing high-volume of RF energy differentials.
Enter 3G, which from a detection technology point of view was a game changer. A major leap in detection technology was required, and about 10 years ago, the idea of using trilateration in detecting mobile phone signals was introduced. What followed was a combination of R&D, years of operational testing and development and the introduction of high-end IT and software skills from Estonia. The present-day Mobilewatch solution was born.
